I have decided to return to an old project, building a model boat. I purchased a model boat building kit while in graduate school in New York City; about 40 years ago. The kit is the "Elsie or Benjamin W. Latham". I also purchased at the time a booklet on how to make the boat from the kit, which has minimal instructions. At this point the solid wooden hull has been carved/sanded to proper size and profile. The wooden planking has been installed as well as the waterways. It is time to start on some details of the deck: scuppers and timberheads. Below is a picture of the work table laid over the router table with the ship and book. I also made a seat for a salvaged chair frame from a broken IKEA chair. (Not shown.)
The scupper making tool was made from an old #46 drill. It was carefully held against the spinning sanding disk on one side and then the other. The end was then flattened by rubbing lightly against the stationary belt. The picture above shows the result. I believe I can just press ita against the bulkheads in the correct position to make a depression that is about 1/32" deep. A template was made many years ago to locate both the scuppers and the timberheads. The template was used to mark the timberheads prior to making the scuppers.
The photo above was taken through a magnifying glass. Getting the camera to focus on the tool was hit or miss!
